A few months ago we started something we call "Three Good Things". Each night, usually when we are taking our evening walk, we each share three good things that happened to us during the day. It helps us focus on the positive, because after 40 years it's easy to dwell in negative land. Here are the positives we have found:
1. It's a jump start to pleasant conversation. We all get in gripey habits and this forces us to address a good event.
2. It causes us to look at our day all day long, and take note of good things that can be shared.
3. We learn things about each other's day that might be missed otherwise. Particularly on bad days, it's easy to share only the bad stuff and not remember there is always something good.
4. It reminds us to be grateful. We have so many reasons.
5. Three is an easy number. Five is too many (feels like work) and one isn't enough (too easy) so we use three. It's just right.
6. On a stressful day, it's a nice way to de-stress. Even if it's hard to come up with three things, hearing your partner's is calming.
We don't have to write anything down or memorize anything, but just have a conversation. That's all there is to it.
In case anyone wants to copy this, feel free. Just remember where you heard it first!
